🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧

New week, new book review. Say hello to my first five star read of 2025. I haven’t seen very many posts about this book here on #bookstagram and what a shame!

{Thank you so much to @prhaudio for the listening copy of The Heart of Winter by Jonathan Evison. It’s narrated by Kimberley Farr who I thought did a fantastic job with a story that weaves back and forth from present day all throughout memorable moments of the past and a how a couple went from a not-so-great first date in college to a marriage with kids, jobs, property, pets, and suddenly celebrating a 90th birthday.}

“A marriage is not built in a day to last, rather it is shaped gradually and methodically to withstand the ruinous effects of time and outside forces beyond the control of its principle players.”

When this story opens up we are celebrating Abe’s 90th birthday at their farm on Bainbridge Island. Along side of him is his beloved wife, Ruth, his children, and friends they haven’t seen in a while. Abe is quite a curmudgeon, while Ruth is much more sunny and optimistic. How did this opposites attract couple get together!?

“Time did not march on methodically minute by minute, day by day, it sprinted away from us in mad bursts, a thief in flight.”

The story continues forwards then backwards where we learn Abe and Ruth meet at the University of Washington. We learn the story of their marriage with all the lovely moments and tests along the way. In present day the couple is being put to the ultimate test when Ruth’s toothache turns into so much more.

“Life was a relentless war of attrition, to love was torturous, for love ravished you and brought you to your knees, it broke you’re will over and over until death seemed like a merciful conclusion.”

This book gives the reader an up close look at life and marriage. It feels so full of wisdom, advice and life. I couldn’t look away if I tried.

“To live fully was to recognize and acknowledge the tiniest of beauties.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The ending 🥹😭
