Thriller Thursday // Audiobook Review
Title: The Night We Lost Him
Author: Laura Dave
Publisher: S&S/Marysure Rucci Books
Genre: Slow Burn Mystery/Drama
Ok, Ok, this one is more of a slow burn mystery/drama vs. a thriller. It’s narrated by everyone’s favorite, Julia Whelan. She’s brilliant, of course, but I’m torn on this one. Obviously, she made it a production and I binged this quick little read; and no doubt can she do all the voices including male ones extraordinarily well. However, taking on several male voices in this one ofter left me confused! There’s quite a few characters in this web!
Thank you to @simonaudio @librofm for the early listening copy! This one is out September 17th. It also just dropped as an add-on for @bookofthemonth
“If you’re looking for answers you can’t find, you need to change the question.”
Look, the audio of this one kept me engaged more than I think a print copy would, however, because there are so many ex-wives, lovers, siblings, etc. for a simple story this one left me confused a lot!
Nora is the daughter of Liam’s from his first wife. Sam is the son from his second wife. They never really had a relationship together because their father kept most of his life in separate boxes. It was easier that way. Now they find themselves on a quest together after their father fell to his death from his cliffside cottage estate. Though, his death was ruled accidental, Sam doesn’t buy it and wants Nora’s help to prove someone is hiding something. We journey with Nora and Sam to “Windbreak” the cottage and through their grief. Then we get past tense chapters from the father, Liam, of his early years, romances, his ex-wives and so much more.
Bottom line…love hurts.
I did enjoy this one, but I’m going to be completely honest and say it was kind of frustrating too and anticlimactic in the reveal. Probably not very rememberable down the line, unfortunately. But for a couple hours…I had fun and sometimes that’s what we need reading. I was also happy that Nora and Sam seemed to get closure and worked through their grief.
