{Thank you to @celadonbooks for inviting me to be apart of your #celadonreadstogether program again. There is just something so special about a debut novel and you guys knocked it out of the park selecting Penitence by Kristin Koval. This is a slow burn literary mystery, so if you’re a reader that struggles with a slow burn, I can’t recommend the audiobook enough that is expertly narrated by the beloved Therese Plummer. Thank you @macmillan.audio for my copy!}

When a shocking murder occurs in the home of Angie and David Sheehan, their lives are shattered. Desperate to defend their family, they turn to small-town lawyer Martine Dumont for help, but Martine isn’t just legal counsel—she’s also the mother of Angie’s first love, Julian, a now-successful New York City criminal defense attorney. As Julian and Angie confront their shared past and long-buried guilt from a tragic accident years ago, they must navigate their own culpability and the unresolved feelings between them.
This book is comped for fans of Ann Patchett and Celeste Ng, both amazing authors, but for me, it reminded me of Angie Kim, an author who is equally good that I have loved. You could also draw a comparison to Jodi Picoult who likes to push boundaries with difficult topics to make you think. This book is beautiful, yet sad. The writing is phenomenal. It really gives pause to if life moments are black & white or if there is some grey areas too. I can’t recommend this one enough and will be eager to read what this author writes next!
