Title: Divine Rivals
Author: Rebecca Ross
My #booksta pals @thebookscript & @mommaleighellensbooknook had been recommending this book to me for awhile now! I mean, let’s be real, it’s been everywhere; both when it first published and now more recently with the sequel ‘Ruthless Vows’ coming out in the US on 12/26. I was promised this was lighter fantasy and a perfect book for someone like me who is still new to the genre. That with my love historical fiction and romance, and I can easily say I was into this story from page one and never had any confusion. It was just the getting started part; I’m a stubborn #moodreader and it wasn’t until I found out there were letters throughout the book that I bumped it right up to the top of my #tbr to read.
“The days to come will only grow darker. And when you find something good? You hold on to it.”
Dragons. Warring Gods. Wolfish Beasts. Heartbreak. Magical. Coming of Age. Romance. Rivals.
After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But Iris, has her own problems. Her mother is an addict and her brother who went off to fight in the war is missing. Despite only being eighteen, Iris goes off to work as a journalist. To help her anxiety she writes letters to her brother and slips them in the door of the wardrobe they used to share, where they vanish. Where are they going? Who’s reading them?
She would never guess they are going to her work rival, Roman Kitt. Through letters, they begin to forge a connection, even when Iris makes a desperate choice to become a war corespondent and go to the front of the lines searching for her brother.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ You seriously almost forget you aren’t just reading a historical romance novel for a good portion of this. Then it’s like, oh yeah, they went to war for the gods, and their dragons and beasts; not to fight the nazis. I just ate up the magical letters and typewriters in this. Couldn’t get enough of it! Coming of age and young love is my favorite. FYI, this ends of a BANG and a cliffhanger. You’re going to be antsy for the next book. I loved it so much I had to buy the UK covers!
