I’ve never read John Kenney before but his humorous and heartfelt writing reminded me a little of Fredrik Backman.

We meet Bud Stanley, an obituary writer, in the beginning of this story just going through the motions of life. HIs wife recently left him for somebody better, but nonetheless he decides it’s time to get back out there. He gets fixed up on a blind date, but instead of an actual date, the woman shows up extremely late with her ex-boyfriend and announces they are getting back together. Could things get any worse? The answer is yes. After drinking too much, he accidentally publishes his own obituary! Doing this kicks him out of his employer’s system and he has to wait to see if he’ll be fired or allowed to return to work. During that time he goes to his former MIL’s funeral (and a few more!) and this begins a change in trajectory. Along with friends, neighbors, and collogues Bud gets pushed out of the doom and gloom bubble he has been in and realizes, life is short, it’s precious and he wants more out of it.

As the great poet Mary Oliver wrote, “Tell me, what do you plan on doing with your one wild and precious life?”

Funny and heartwarming and one I highly recommend—⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
