Pub Week Book Review
Title: Margo’s Got Money Troubles
Author: Rufi Thorpe
Publisher: William Morrow
Genre: Literary Fiction
Say hello to the buzziest summer read! Margo isn’t going to be for everyone, but she certainly was for me!
Bold. Unique. LOL. Heartwarming. Empowering.
Margo is the daughter of a Hooter’s waitress and ex-pro wrestler (Yes, seriously!). Based on her upbringing, she knows it’s on her to make it in this world, so she decides to try junior college. A more affordable option vs. her friends that are going away for school. Her plans quickly become derailed when she has an affair with her English professor and six weeks later becomes pregnant.
Despite no support from her mother and being estranged from her father, Margo decides to have the baby knowing she will be a 20 year old single mother. Things won’t be easy, but she wasn’t expecting to get fired from her job and facing eviction. When he father shows up at her doorstep offering childcare for a place to stay, it seems to be the answer to her prayers.
Margo quickly settles into her mother role, and finds she doesn’t want to leave her child. When she stumbles upon ‘Onlyfans’ could that be her ticket out?
Ok, I know some people are going to see: Hooters, Wrestling, and Onlyfans and say, “thank you, next.”, to this book. Figuring it’s not for them. But, I beg you to give it a chance. These character and scenarios may be unique, but the meat of the story can apply to many people.
This book explores money, motherhood and social media. It’s a coming-of-age story filled with love. I loved the rich cast of characters. This book teaches you not to judge.
I combined the book with an audio copy thanks to @librofm. Elle Fanning did an excellent job. Also, this has been picked up by AppleTV and I can totally see it on screen.
