Title: Sandwich
Author: Catherine Newman
Publisher: Harper
Genre: Literary Fiction
Thank you @booksparks (#SRC2024 #GameSetRead) for the #gifted copy of Sandwich by Catherine Newman. I loved the author’s previous book We All Want Impossible Things and couldn’t wait to get this one into my hands. It did not disappoint!
Catherine Newman’s books may be small in size, but with her brilliant writing style, that’s all you need. She writes in a quiet, thoughtful way, but every word seems to matter. She writes like she wrote the book just for you. It feels intimate. Likes she talking to you and you alone. You feel so much through her characters.
“It is a privilege to grow old. We are lucky to be here.”
⬆️ This is something I say and feel every birthday. I have one coming up next month and I can’t wait. I’m not old, I’m experienced. I felt like that was the essence of the main character, Rocky.
Rocky, along with her husband and two children have vacationed every summer on Cape Cod. They stay at the same quaint beach house and fill it with memories, good meals (including a cooler of sandwiches on the beach!) and all.the.feels. This year Rocky feels ‘sandwiched’ between her half-grown young adult children and her aging parents. Bonus, is the menopause hormonal rage and melancholy. 🤣
As time marches on (#timeisathief) their week’s on the Cape feel full of nostalgia. It’s about life, family and marraige.
“You could decide to be happy,”
“The rest of it? Put it in a little boat in your mind and just push it out to sea.”
“Are you telling me to repress my sorrow and anger?”
“Not repress. Set free.”
Sandwich has been one of my favorite books this month. If you like Ethan Joella’s @joellawriting books, I think you would like this book!
