Shark Heart - Trust me on this one!

Title: Shark Heart Author: Emily Habeck Publisher: Mary Sue Rucci Books @marysueruccibooks Genre: Literary Magical Realism August: @bookofthemonth

“Are we all just actors, performing some unbound art form for God, the audience of space?”

I’m so glad for early reviews and Indie Next votes for putting this book on my radar. Because, let’s be real, when you read the synopsis of a man turning into a shark, I think a lot of us will think, “that’s so weird…nope not for me...I don’t read those kinds of books, etc.” I’m here to tell you, I had those thoughts and I WAS WRONG! Author Emily Habeck has accomplished writing a unique, beautiful, lyrical story that I was totally immersed in. I read this in less than 24 hours and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it . Now a few weeks later, I’m still thinking about it; this book will likely stay on my yearly favorites!

The concept of a human turning into an animal sounds so bizarre, but honestly it is written less like magical realism and sci-fi then you might image. Think of this concept the way you would think of someone being diagnosed with cancer or any terrible illness/disease.

I loved the short chapters and the way some of this book was written like a play script. Lewis was a theater teacher and it had a connection to the play Our Town by Thorton Wilder.

“But maybe, he thought, maybe if I practice, I would never really have to say goodbye.”

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ At its core this is a story of marriage, motherhood and letting go. Perfect timing as we send our kiddos off to school. Gah…It’s just a beautiful book. Take a chance. Take a chance. Will you trust me?
