The Guncle was my first book by author Steven Rowley, but it definitely won’t be my last. I’ve already begun seeking out his backlist. I have no chill! The Guncle is one of the those books you laugh through, you cry, you smile, and when you’re finished you give the book a big giant hug. Then it goes on your special shelf. Not just any old shelf on your bookshelf! No-sir-ree!
📚 Book Review 📚
Title: The Guncle
Author: Steven Rowley
Publisher: Putman
Genre: Literary Fiction
Patrick, also know as Gay Uncle Patrick or GUP for short has always loved his niece Maisie and Grant. That is he loves spending time with them when they come from CT to Palm Springs for visits; andddd then loves sending them home! Patrick is easily overwhelmed in the caretaker role.
So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother (Patrick’s BFF from college) and his brother find himself in his own crisis Patrick steps up for the summer and takes in Maisie and Grant.
Along the way he figures the caretaker thing out, shares some wisdom he dubs “Guncle Rules” and his eyes are opened to some things he’s been hiding from so he can finally begin to heel.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved the humor and heart of this book. And I now know what a Cafta is. I have a few myself to lounge in the summer. I call them my hippie muu-muus, though. 😂 This is a must read and must add to your shelf!
**My favorite Guncle rule was sweet 16. “I want you to really live. To live is the rarest thing. Most people merely exist.” 🥰
