🍾 Pub Day Book Review 🍾
Title: The Wedding People
Genre: Contemporary/Literary Fiction
Happy Pub Day to the recent @readwithjenna pick, The Wedding People by Alison Espach. And huge thank you @henryholtbooks for the ARC. I was also lucky enough to receive a listening copy from @macmillan.audio & @librofm When I saw that Helen Laser was narrating it, I dove right in. She is a top tier narrator, IMO. I think the audio especially works because this is a very conversational story with witty dialogue.
This one is a tricky one to review because some of the foundation of this story could be a content warning for some readers. You’ve likely seen what I’m alluding to out there. But I use the word foundation because it’s not the true plot of this story.
For me, this felt like an adult coming of age story or one maybe about losing yourself along the way and not only finding yourself again, but maybe finding something even better. I found it to be a thoughtful character driven story, but it had a clear plot too. It’s simplistic, smart, hilarious, tender, raw and deeply moving. It has one of my favorite tropes of found family, which I’m a sucker for.
“There may come a time when we change someone’s life without even knowing it.”
Newport, Rhode Island: Phoebe arrives at the Grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, and not a bag in sight. It’s a place she’s dreamed of coming to for years. She dreamed of shucking oysters and sunset sails with her husband. Only she’s here alone at the lowest moment in her life. What happens next is meeting a bride, Lila, in the elevator who is confused who she is and why she’s there. Lila is having a week long wedding extravaganza in her father’s honor and had booked the entire place with no outside visitors. The wedding people are dysfunctional and it turns out that is exactly what Phoebe needs.
I think as humans we all feel like everyone has it all figured out, but maybe, just maybe, we are more alike than different. Everyone is just doing the best that they can.
Jenna nailed this because I think it would make an excellent book club pick! Pick up a copy today!
